Direct Earnings Attachment whilst applying for a mortgage.

Hiya,

This is the first time I have posted on here.

I am looking for some advice about how a Direct Earnings Attachment (DEA) could affect your credit rating and a mortgage application.

I am asking as I have received a letter from my payroll stating that they have received a DEA from a govt. department.

I currently work for a govt. department and apparently (after checking on the net) I have found out that govt. departments can deduct from govt. employees without need for a court order.

Does anyone know anything more about this sort of thing? And in particular how a Direct Earnings Attachment (DEA) could affect your credit rating and a mortgage application.

Thanks, Ginger Jim Bob.

  • That is the thing I am not sure.

Having been in work from college and the past 20 years I have not claimed a benefit from the specific dept named in the letter to my knowledge.

Typical that this letter arrived on a Saturday so I can't ring up and ask...

If the deduction is legitimate, it will make no difference to your credit history as it won't be visible there.

Something deducted from your pay will probably mean you can borrow less, unless you get a property and mortgage sorted before 26/4/14 when the MMR rules begin and lenders take responsibility for affordability.

  • I am not aware of any dependant children and never had a student loan.

Also the dept mentioned in the letter doesn't pay those out.

If you have no previous "interraction" with receipt of Govt money from any possible source, it sounds like a mistake.

You're going to have to wait until Monday, as only the private sector is all present and correct and ready for work at 19:00 on a Saturday night! :D

I work 24/7/365 days a year for the good old NHS driving a big yellow van.
Now I know the NHS has not been privatised yet ?

Lets hope it stays that way!

Back to the thread. Do you really think there will be no damage done as I am terrified this will ruin our application.

DEA's are used by the DWP to recover overpaid benefits.

The DEA won't impact the application directly. However it will impact the amount you can borrow.
