I want to build a pc to play games from the humble bundle such as civilisation.
I've priced up the selfbuild below but can anyone suggest any changes?
Thanks

Try the techie boards?0

The three bits that spring to mind looking at that are the PSU, videocard and memory.
The videocard is a little low end for gaming (although that partly depends on your monitor resolution), and I'd really try for 16gb of ram if you can manage it, as 8gb is about the minimum now (I'm at 32gb which was an extravagance, but I tend to run a bunch of things at the same time).
The PSU should be ok, but doesn't leave much headroom for if you change the videocard in a couple of years.0 -
He certainly does not need 16GB RAM.. 8GB is definitely the new 'gamer rig standard' however it's still very adequate, 16GB is overkill. I upgraded my rig from 8 to 16GB RAM and I've had no noticeable performance boost when gaming.
OP what is your ideal/max budget? And what parts do you need exactly? Just the case and all internals (i.e. motherboard, graphics card, processor, hard drive, DVD drive, etc)? Do you need a monitor, keyboard, mouse or speakers, etc?
Civilization is not a very intense game so you will not need anything high end.0 -

Agreed, unless the OP had applications that specifically required a lot of ram then 8GB should be fine. It's all I'm running in my main workhorse PC as even when running several heavy applications it's not used up all the ram and during gaming it doesn't use that much. Ram prices are usually on the way down so if needed in future it's easy enough to upgrade and likely will be cheaper.
The PSU is more than ok as it will give a decent amount of headroom to run more powerful hardware (until getting into top end or dual GPUs), graphics card companies always overstate the recommended PSU requirements to account for cheap, poor quality power supplies. Total power consumption measured by reviewers with overclocked, power hungry processors is much lower than stated. I had no problems running a Nehalem i7, six sticks of ram, an AMD 4850, pair of hard drives, PCI-E wireless and soundcard.

corsair are struggling with qulity of late, I have had many modules go down and getting a ticket to send them back to corsair is just a PAIN and not worth it.
I have kingstons in one machine that are years old in the hyperx brand their DDR that have out lived and performed the dominator series modules.
I have hyper beasts in my new machine that run 2400MHZ when xmp profile is selected in bios their rated 24000MHZ 8GB modules and I got them for £72.00 on overclockers on weekly deal.
if your interested in overclocking, you want a K rated (4570K) processor that is unlocked , the haswell processor although a very good one they run hot not overclocked, and found myself changing the cpu cooler, to give my self headroom on temps so I opted to watercooled cpu cooler, H100 corsair cpu cooler.0 -
Anything more than 8gb is a waste. Most games barely use 2gb!
I have 8gb in dev machine, I have IIS running, photoshop, adobe premiere, SQL Server with a hundred databases and stored procs running, all my dev tools and running 4 monitors. Barely use 4gb. 32gb is more than most of our xenservers have, and they run full production sites and databases for 100k users.
Good old marketing for ya. NExt year they'll be telling you that you need 64gb.0 -
I will agree 8gb is fine, I run 16gb in mine but do heavy video editing and often use over 8 but games never push it.
I recent got a g.skill ripsaw 8gb kit 2133mhz for just short of £70 on amazon so worth a look, the extra speed not really needed but will help a little, minimum I would go for is 1866mhz.
As mentioned a better cooler is a good idea for your processor, got my 3570k to 4.4mhz with a decent cooler.
If on a bugget for a gpu look at the 7850, R7 260X and R7 260, will cost a little more but will give it a good kick.
Pretty sure you can get a windows license cheaper so have a look around, don't worry if its 8 or 8.1 both will work with 8.1.
In some ways I am probably pushing your specs a little higher than needed, but its a little money which will make ahuge difference.

most games are still only 32bit.
very few will need 8gb, let alone more0 -
I don't think it would very long before developers start to produce 64bit only games, desktops and now laptop sales are starting to creep up for 64bit based systems over 32bit as you can run more memory and more memory intensive applications in and on them.
I have seen in games memory spikes of upto 7-8gb usage too in recent releases especially after a few game patches.0
