DFS - Was I mis-sold PPI?

We purchased a sofa from DFS in 2009 in my husbands name. We took out PPI at this time. I have tried to reclaim this on the grounds that my husband was/is self employed and so I believe this means it didn't cover us in the first place?
The cover was 'optional payment protect' so they have declined my claim stating we had the option to opt out and had time to check the paperwork prior to signing.
Is this right?
I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.
