Cosumer rights when damaged property in store

Thanks for the replies, good to see that people on this site care enough to give a little info!
Anyway, the store display gave little access around a floor display and the wall shelf, added to this was the fact that the shelf wasn't in the metal bracket fully and allowed a sharp bit of the bracket to become exposed. Then as I squeezed through this display (and i'm average build) may trousers were caught and hey ho a rip!
The reply from the customer service department said they would refund the p&p cost and wanted a receipt for my original purchase.
Whilest in my opinion, through their careless display and access they have damaged my property and should be liable, I don't know why they should get to keep the trousers (they say for insurance purposes) if I had cut my arm or leg and claimed would they want to keep said limb for insurance purposes.
I'm probably just being flippant but I just wanted to know what my rights would be in this case.
Anyway, I like the trousers too much and they can be repaired without losing the overall look so i'm gonna just keep them. So it looks like a company win in this case!

Send them the bill for the cost of mending, assuming you pay someone to do this.0

Back when i was a lad (ok, 10 years ago) I was running past a bus stop when my coat caught on a bit of metal sticking out from it.. it ripped a big hole in it.
We phoned up the bus company to complain and they were really good about it, they said to go buy a new coat and then send them the receipt. I don't think they ever wanted the old coat as evidence.

I'll have a look to see whether they are in stock, but think these trousers would have been an autumn/winter season style. I'm going to send another letter with a photo of said damaged trousers and see what they come back with. Plus I'll try and get some more info on what compensation they would be looking to give me. May even send an email, the true MSE way!0
