best value tomato sauce (ketchup)

Smashing wrote: »
I have done the round of alternative ketchups, and sainsbury's basics is the only one I would recommend as an alternative to Heinz.

I agree, Sainsbury's basic ketchup is great and it's only around 29p (or maybe even cheaper now).

I like the finer things in life in most things, but I LOVE CHEAP KETCHUP.
My husband & daughter insist on Heinz.
I like that stuff they have in the big bottles in kebab shops mmmmmmm.
    Who makes this.
Its kinda runny & sweet & not as red as the supermarket ones.
When I lived in London a few years ago my local kebab shop used to sell me it for £4. I think they must get it from the cash & carry.
    Any ideas?
I'm talking about the one that comes in a bottle the same size as the have the burger sauce in, in kebab shops.

Nope - can't stand any commercial ketchup. All of them are too sweet. I make my own, from cheap tinned toms (e.g. Lidl at about 13p per tin).

You can vary the flavours e.g. more chilli, less chilli etc, more or less sugar (ugh - not too much, please) :)

It sounds long-winded, but I find it keeps in jars in the fridge for months.

Hugh Furry Animal has a recipe in the RC Cookbook (or maybe the Meat book? ) or Google will find plenty more

  • Hi there

We are all sauceaholics. Have tried most of them, but keep going back to Tesco own brand. Tastes every bit as good as Heinz, and at only a fraction of the price goes on everything - especially my 23month old. Nothing as funny as an orange toddler when they have just been given a couple of spots of suace on their food. How do they manage it?????

I use Tesco value and just decant it into a squeezy bottle - plus it's one of the few that's lactose free.

Yep, 25p - I need to stop recommending it - last few times I went to get some it has been sold out.

Never thought of using tinned tomatoes - doh! - great idea as I already make plum ketchup, when I see plums reduced to virtually nothing - and I save all the value ketchup bottles. Do you sterilise it after you've made it in a hot water bath?

They (the one in London) just said cash & carry, but I don't have a cash & carry card. All them Kebab & Burger shops seem to have it, I just wondered if anyone on here knew where they get it.

I don't have one I can go & ask as I am not a regular customer at any now,k trying to stay out of them:rotfl:

I keep thinking "I should" but have never bothered. Wouldn't necessarily claim it doesn't need sterilising - I guess it depends on how long you're planning to keep it?
