Kaymed Mattress: advice please

Hello there,

I hope this is the right forum to post. I spent a good hour last night reading through all the posts on mattresses, including the heated discussions. However, I wondered if anyone had any specific knowledge about Kaymed and the model I am looking to purchase. If so, I would be really grateful to hear from you as soon as possible.

We have spent time at a large local independent retailer, tried many beds and the only one we found very comfortable was Kaymed Olympus. This is a pocket spring with Visco memory foam layer (50mm), apparently 1400 pocket springs, non turn.

I asked the sales rep in the store for a document or brochure with the specifications and he said there wasn't one. I searched on Kaymed's website and googled the "Olympus" and no hits at all. I wanted to read detailed specs and reviews before purchasing.

I rang up Kaymed (based in Ireland) and was told that this model was "new and only came out early *last* year and so wasn't on the website" (seems odd as their new gel models are indeed on their site). She also said that this model was only available in the store with certain retailers. I imagine this is so we cannot compare online? I was told that it cannot be put on wooden slats and had to be on a divan. The sales rep in the store said it was fine for a wooden slat bed. The guy in the store said it had a 5 yr guarantee and the woman at Kaymed said it had a 10 yr guarantee and the sales rep is probably confused.

The price is £699 in the sale, reduced from £800 and something. I would like to know if anyone has bought this "Kaymed Olympus" bed, whether "1400 pocket spring (double bed), with 50mm visco memory foam layer, micro quilt mattress cover, padded top divan, non-turn" is:

a) an acceptable price for such a bed? and
b) whether they are known for using poor materials mentioned in this thread i.e. reflex foam covered springs,
c) can these beds be used on wooden slats with certain dimensions, i.e. narrow slats or with a wooden board added?
d) if anyone knows what the Kaymed *Olympus* equivalent is?

Thank you so much for your help in advance,

Is a little high, but Kaymed do make good beds, as for the guarantee is comes with 2 years guarantee followed by 8 year warranty.

    b) whether they are known for using poor materials mentioned in this thread i.e. reflex foam covered springs,

Kaymed actual make the foam themselves and are very good at it. So no problems with quality.

    c) can these beds be used on wooden slats with certain dimensions, i.e. narrow slats or with a wooden board added?

Some say slats no wider then 2 or 3 inches then you'll be fine, others say put a board down to support mattress fully. I'm with the first one.

Olympus is the bricks and mortar name, online name will be something else. Kaymed don't want customers trying instore and then buying elsewhere online. As it's not really fair on the retailer that's paying for rent, heating extra overheads etc....

Final note, the Kaymed 1600 is they best selling mattress.
1600 springs hence the name and 70mm of Memory foam, it really is a cracker.

Heres the best price I've seen it at .....http://mattressesnextday.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_4ft6_Double_Kaymed_Visco_Pocket_1600_Mattress.html Just £476

    Better description, but dearer here.....http://www.big-sleep.co.uk/mall/productpage.cfm/TheBigSleepThebigSleepLtd/_ORTHOP001/433082

  • Pinkypants,

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions, and for suggesting a few places with good prices. It seems that buying the olympus 1400 pocket springs with 50mm visco memory foam for 699 (sale price) isn't the best option given the 1600 pocket/70mm foam is 476.

One company told us that the olympus has linen springs! I have no idea what that means.

Buying a mattress is a minefield, thanks for making it clearer.
