Sony A100 SLR 10mp Camera with 18-70mm lens £332.50 + 70-300mm lens for £114!

Unfortunately the lens isnt at that price any more, now showing £179.89. Still a good offer on the camera though. Currys offer on Canon EOS400d also quite tempting at £449.79 with standard lens - if you use 5% discount and get £50 cashback from Canon, should be £377.

Wow absolute bargain. Sadly I bought a Canon 400D not that long ago or I would go for it.
I believe that this is a better camera!
    Excellent spot.

The Canon is a much better camera ......... Sony is old technology.

Not convinced as this comes with image stabilisation thus saving an arm and a leg on lenses.

The lens is now actually £110, you need to add it from the offers panel rather than its usual page.
    Gone ... or have I?

Ok, Sony A100, Canon 400D and Nikon D40x.

They are all good cameras. Whatever you chose, you will be very happy.

You need to look at the price of lenses in general because the camera is the cheap bit.... its the lenes that will drain your wallet. Because good lenses cost serious money, when you start buying them, it will tie you into that camera manufacturer because if and when you upgrade your camera, you will want to keep the use of your expensive lenses. So for example, if you buy the Sony you will be tied into Sony cameras for a good while.

What would I buy? Well I think Nikons are great cameras and that would probably be my first choice.... except that the D40x does not have all the same features as the A100 or the 400D. Features like exposure bracketing are missing from the D40x which is a shame.

The Sony is a good camera and it seems like its priced attractively at the moment. If the cost of lenses are the same as for the Nikon and Canon then go for it but I've just had a quick look and some third party lenses like Sigma and Tamron seem to cost a bit more for the "Sony fit" model compared to Nikon or Canon. FYI, Sony took over Konica Minolta when KM pulled out of the camera market a couple of years ago. Sony cameras retain the Minota lens mount so older Minolta lenes will fit on the Sony.

As I said, I'm sure you won't be dissappointed whatever you chose. What have I got?......... I've got the Canon 400D and am happy with it.

I've got the Canon 400D too but the Canon has the lowest digital noise at high ISOs compared to the Sony A100. :T
  • Offtopic I know but for those DSLR buyers, I think both Canon and Nikon have still got their cashback offers on.
I don't want to get into a big debate over it, but I say Nikon, as I've had my D50 more than a year ;)
PM me if you want justification?
