Telehandler licence when on JSA

I know I can obtain a FLT licence for reach & counter-balance forklifts through the job centre, but was curious as to whether they also offer the course for telehandlers as well (for those not in the know, a telehandler is one of those forklifts that is all-terrain & has a large telescopic arm that can not only reach long distances but can also have the forklift attachment changed for a loading shovel, dozer blade and many other bits of kit).

  • Funding varies between Jobcentres - you'd be best to ask when you sign on ;)

When I was signing on the job centre kept trying to send me to telehandler jobs even though I only had a basic forklift licence.

Be aware if you go on a telehandler course I was told by a training company not to waste money on it with them as not all certificates are accepted on building sites.

So check before you do a course especially if you decide to pay for it yourself.

I know a lot of warehouses will still insist on an internal certificate even if you have a full FLT cert anyway, so I am going to start with a C/B & Reach FLT course and take it from there.

  • Speak to your JCP advisor and look at local FE Colleges. F/L licences are hard to fund as there is no funding from the central SFA pot of money for colleges, the only way is through specific project money (European Social Fund) and usually, the amount the college would get doesn't cover the fee for F/L training apart from the refresher. You may get lucky though.

The course for counter balance and reach FLTs is fully-funded so that is now in process (forms filled-in and sent off).

Why would pat want to do that when he's already sorted out a course 5 months ago? You don't run a forklift agency in Derby by any chance do you?
