Will Lidl be cheaper for this shopping list?

Hey guys. I have access to a tesco, morrisons and a lidl (lidl being the most convenient).

Garlic x3
Onions 2kg
Canned sweetcorn x2
Carrots 1kg
Canned chopped tomatoes x7
Wholemeal pasta x 1.5kg
Large Sweet potatoes x7
Froze mixed veg 1kg
Butter
Cheese 500g-1k
Frozen berries 500g
Yoghurt 1kg
Wheatabix x14

I've worked out that tescos is cheaper than morrisons, however I can;t find any price comparison sites for lidl, and I've never shopped their before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cant give you exact prices but I would say definately cheaper than Tesco. You may have to buy their own "Wheatabix" which is more than likely as good as the original. I buy their own sweetcorn and it is lovely and only 32p per tin.
  • I think for most things on that list Lidl will be either very close in price or cheaper than buying own brand from one of the big 4 supermarkets. The only thing I'm not sure about (because I never buy them) is sweet potatoes - I'm not sure if Lidl regularly stock them or what the price would be.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

It may well come out a bit cheaper, but lidl doesn't have the range of the others so there's no guarantee what they've got in from one week to the next. So it depends if you want everything in 1 shop.
They may or may not have the sweet potato, they do do them but not all the time,, not sure they run to whole wheat pasta, they have had frozen berries but again not sure if they're there all the time. They have their own brand weetabix, but not always the "proper" one.
I tend to use lidl for what I can get and to check out the offers, then go on to one of the others if I need to.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

You may be able to get organic carrots and onions at Lidl and stil save money on Tesco prices.

With Weetabix I'd suggest looking for offers on mysupermarket as well.

The butter in my local Lidl is always salted so unsure whether they do unsalted ??

Not seen sweet potatoes in my Lidl recently.

The garlic is that Chinese stuff and not as good as Spanish.

Lidl does organic wholemeal pastas but think only 500g sizes in my local store

The tinned sweetcorn isn't always the best quality, I've found.

Lidl is really good for cheese including lots of French ones and sometimes even organic Cheddar.
  • Thanks for all the replies!

From the sounds of it I'm going to have to go to both stores (the sweet potatoes are quite important), so I'll have to pick a day I'm not feeling lazy to go shopping :).

As for the wheatabix, I kind of meant the own brand version, I'm just not quite sure what the generic name is for them. Wheat sticks?

I'll let you all know what it came to in the end.

Aparently Lidl Weetbixies (or whatever) as equally as good as the real Mccoy. Lidl often have the real version too and sometimes with 20% extra. Cheese (mild cheddar, but tastes ok to me) is about £5 per kilo if you get their basic range. I know this as I bought a slab for the kids birthday this week.
I think you should be able to get it cheaper at Lidl.

The tinned tomatoes in Lidl are the same price as Tesco value toms, but much better quality with thicker juice.

My Lidl does sell unsalted as well as salted butter.
  • Hey guys. I just got back from lidl with my shopping. It came to £20 in the end. The only thing I couldn't buy were the frozen berries.

The most expensive things were: Cheese £4.79 for 1kilo, Sweet potatoes £4.88 for 3.7kilos (pretty excessive).

They didn't have any normal frozen veg left so I had to buy the microwavable packs which were £1.20x2 (4 in each pack)
