Weighing up my options at the min.
I owe £30 k plus....some of that being the Bungalow which i owned but has now been repossessed.
I am in a private rented apartment and live alone.
I have MS and have been advised to go bankrupt but am currently paying my creditors £1 a month.
I have been advised before going bankrupt to write to my creditors and explain my illness and explain that i wont ever work again and see if i can get some if not all debts written off.
I have no assets at all and dont drive so haven't a car they could take.
Has anyone ever gone down this road ?
Thank you in advance.

hi,
this is pretty standard debt advice for someone in your situation. You clearly aren't going to be able to repay your debts so you have nothing to lose by asking if your creditors will write them off. National Debtline can generate the letters for you, see http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales//forms/rp_no_sample_letter_r4.php
Many trust funds such as British Gas that can sometime help with the bankruptcy fees (google for info on this) usually require you to have tried to get the debts written off before they will assist you.
I wouldn't get your hopes up. It's pretty routine for your creditors to decline to write off

Hello there,
Longtermplanner is absolutely right. It is very difficult for a creditor to agree to write a debt off. But it is not impossible. The clients we have helped to obtain a write-off have usually been unwell, as such supporting evidence from their doctor may have helped.
It can be a long, drawn-out process. You may find that bankruptcy is a far quicker, and more simple route to take. For further information on bankruptcy, we've a useful fact sheet:

Thank you both for your replies.
Two questions
I am worried because I pay for my gas and electricity monthly by direct debit and am in debit with them and someone said this will have to go on the bankruptcy and they can refuse to supply me any more.
And my tenancy will be affected ?0 -
Your gas and electricity supplies will NOT be cut off if you go bankrupt.
re your tenancy. If it is Council / Housing Association it will be unaffected.
If it is private, then you can ask the Official Receiver not to contact your landlord if you are worried about your tenancy being ended. However most private landlords take the sensible view that if you have managed to pay the rent all the time when you had debts and were a good tenant, then the chances are that you will carry on paying the rent now you no longer have your other debts. So unless you have rent arrears, this is unlikely to be a problem in practice.0 -
Thank you for that.
I have to say my landlords are lovely and i never miss my rent.
Regarding the gas and elec if i have debt with them which i do surely this would go with the bankruptcy ? therefor i feel sure they wouldn't provide me with gas elc etc..i worry about the utilities etc water could they refuse to supply ?
so sorry for the questions just want everything clear before i proceed .0 -
All that will happen is the debts will go into the BR and you just carry on paying your DD as normal.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0

yes any utility debts will be included in your bankruptcy and will be wiped out.
About 25,000 people a year go bankrupt in England and Wales. Don't you think you were have heard if there were 25,000 people a year being cut off from having electricity, gas and water? This isn't going to happen
