Hi,
Just wondered if anyone had ever only bought food online for a month?
I'm considering setting myself this challenge with maybe a £10 montly buffer to cut out all the £5 here and there I spend which all seem to add up over the month. Thought might also make me more organised!!

I buy mine this way, but still have to top up with bread & other fresh supplies. It does stop me impulse buying though!I Believe in saving money!!!:T
A Bargain is only a bargain if you need it!0 -
I do one big monthly online shop for most of my food including meat, toiletries etc. I then just do a little top up shop once a week at our local greengrocers (who also do bread and milk as well as veggies) Worked out that by doing it this way we somehow saved £100 per month (less silly impulse buys I guess) and there's only tw of us!
I do get a small amount of frozen veggies in to bung in the freezer but these are more of a backup btw as I prefer the taste of fresh and our local greengrocers stuff tastes better and lasts longer than anything I have ever bought from a supermarket. Plus he's often cheaper!Everyone has a dark side... apparently mine is called Harold?!? :huh:0 -
That sounds like a GREAT idea, might start doing that myself! Good idea.0

I did it for a while, it saved me money when I was very busy and I would have just gone to a supermarket and shopped quickly (and spent more than intended because of impulse buying..).
Now I have a bit more time, and between yellow stickers and shopping around I spend much much less than I used to.
Lidl/Aldi, and in particular ethnic shops can be much cheaper than shopping online, particularly if I add the odd yellow stickers (e.g. hardly ever buy full price meat or potatoes).
I would say if you have a set shopping list, lots of branded items, fussy eaters in your family, online shopping can save you money.
If you are a bit more flexible, can improvise using the bargains you find shopping around, then you can save even more.
Or you could mix and match and buy bulky or branded items online, the rest locally.0 -
I would do all my shopping online but my shopaholic mother likes to drag me to Sainsbury's. Sometimes Ocado prices on organic veg are cheaper than Sainsbury's but not always.0

I'm doing it this month to cut costs. I find when I use mysupermarket, I'm much better able to prioritize what I need within budget and avoid impulse buys. Plus, the delivery passes that they do now can really cut delivery costs!0

I use mysupremarket to tell me what a good price is for something. I do almost all my shopping in Aldi with a few bits from other stores occasionally (mainly storecupboard/freezer top ups from £ shop, Farmfoods etc). I shop weekly to a meal plan so that way I never need to do mid-week top up shopping.
I think the answer to OP's question is that it could work for you if you're an impulse shopper but there are cheaper ways of shopping if you are disciplined, have the time and a range of shops to choose from0 -
I do 90% of our shopping online and it works for us even though our income is pretty limited. I used to trawl the supermarkets for offers and bargains. I was a regular around the YS areas at certain times and it was not unheard of to spend an hour and a half in one shop hovering for the next phase of reductions or searching the shelves for things with that days date on to take and be reduced by those doing the reductions. I got to know staff and would have a little chat and it made shopping quite a sociable experience. Times change though and with so much pushing and shoving and competition around the YS areas even in Waitrose. The fact that OH was fed up waiting in the car or at home for a call to say I needed collecting became a bit of an issue too. Now because of health we get out even less and have resorted to online shopping with Ocado. Despite the assumption that they are too expensive I've found that bulk buying offers means I rarely pay full price and they have flash sale items that can be added just during the check out process. Another bonus is that offers apply to when the item is added to your order not dependant on when your shopping is delivered, so this can increase the offer duration by 3 wks+ if you book deliveries in advance.
I've found that due to less impulse buys I actually spend less. When I am tempted I often add something and then later have a reality check and think do I really need it or will I actually use it and then delete it.
The Smart pass is useful and if you don't sign up after a while they offer it free for 3 or 6mths. When it's expired don't sign up and the price of it will keep dropping. I got a midweek pass for 6mths for£14.99. If you can afford to have late deliveries then they often have free delivery slots.
Can you tell I'm a fan of Ocado?:rotfl:They have made life so much easier for us.0 -
I'm going to give this a try, getting a 6 months Sainsburys delivery pass so will give it a whirl for the next 6 months.
Got my first order ready to go and have been through a cookbook or two and made sure I am buying meals.
Hoping to spli it into 2 orders a week at around £40 each, min delivery spend, will keep you posted.0
