I thought this was very interesting...

"6. Sharing by tagging a friend in a comment. There were 66 comments - and of those I could only see the most recent 25. And I was only shown 5 shares. So this is definitely NOT a way to enter a Like and Share comp, your sharing MUST involve the share button in one of the ways listed above. If the page owner asks you to tag people in a comment in order to enter, remember that unless they are monitor comments as they go along, they may only see the last handful of entries before the competition closes."

    Also surprising.....

"5. Sharing on your own timeline but set to "only me". There were 28 clicks on the share button, but I could only see 20 of the people who had shared. I presume the other 8 had profiles that were not fully public. If you are worried about annoying non comping friends and family, sharing with "only me" with your profile fully public could be the way forward. Check, though, whether the promoter has specified that your share should be public. They sometimes do - after all, the whole point of them running a competition is to get some advertising!"

Jane Willis is a star for sharing this info with us! :)

Yes, but what Jane has found that even when people shared her post privately, she could still see it anyway - which is quite surprising!

I'm more concerned about how a "winner" is chosen. There's no way to collect all the names to put them elsewhere (EG in word, to then use a random chooser). If there were 1000 shares, the page owner would have to go through the list and copy each and every name. Do you see B&M doing that with 20,000 odd names each week? I don't think so!

At least with the app comps you can feel assured that they are random.

I still won't be entering them!
    Thanks to all posters :A

I agree Jaibaby - I wondered that too! B&M don't even require you to share - just to like them so out of their 10s of 1000s of fans - how do they choose!? Wonder if we could ask them?

  • The facebook programmer API allows you access to a serious amount of data. For a company like B&M I'd have to assume they do the old "assign a number" thing. Where they take a snapshot of their likes, and then generate a number from 1 to number of likes.

For a small company or an individual that isn't able to leverage the API, I have no idea how they'd even go about it.

There are various random "pickers" you can use to choose winners on FB, Rafflecopter do one of them

  • I'm not quite sure what she means by sharing to 'only me' but your profile not being "fully public"? My default settings are for my posts only to be visible to friends, but since you can now set your privacy settings for every individual post, I don't see why this would make any difference to whether an 'only me' share can be seen by the comp runner?
