Has anyone heard of 360 peer reviews?

Has anyone heard of this system when used in conjunction with performance appraisal. One of my mates has been in his job for about ten years (driving/mentoring new staff), and has been told that he will have to be rated by his fellow staff members.
I was horrified to hear this, because we both thought it was almost like being voted for by the general public on a reality TV show.

They are pretty standard in a lot of offices. I wouldn't worry about it unless he's very unpopular/incompetent.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Common is some sectors.
This is where management can confirm which individualas aren't team players and don't fit well with others.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -

Fairly common these days in a long list of HR techniques. Some of the results can be entertaining especially at snr mgt level.
Its fine if your work with people who follow the mantra of 'you scratch my back' if you work with a bunch of back-biting, ego driven, political morons its a pain as that results in HR meetings.0 -

Cheers, exactly what I imagined it could be like, I'll tell him to start taking them down the pub more often:D0 -
Quite usual in many areas. They can be thought provoking and effect change if taken onboard in the right way.0

I suppose if they are entirely honest, that would be right, but the other night in the pub, we were discussing the possible pitfalls.
As he mentors people, and has to show them the ropes, as well as outlining what is totally wrong, some of his younger workers just lately have been questioning him too much, to the extent where he has had to tell them to just listen. He is now worried that they will be included in this process and will mark him down. He also worries that other people who he thought of as buddies, will see this as an opportunity to reply negatively. The worst case scenario would be him being disciplined if everyone decided to stick the knife in.
I now wish that we hadn't gone down the pub and discussed it (trying to reassure him), because he seems really worried about it.0 -
I think most of his colleagues will be bright enough to realise firstly that they will still need to work together after this, secondly if 360 reviews are the order of the day then he will be invited to comment on them too and thirdly they will be concerned about how they come across in their comments. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.
