Ariel Liquitabs

Options
I think there was a post somewhere about this but, I use ariel liquitabs but want to save money and get a cheaper option. I tried tescos liquitabs but they just dont wash the same or smell the same. Any ideas of what might work as well as ariel and be cheaper but actually wash properly?
thanks in advance

I use Asda/Tesco value bio (half recommended amount) and this cleans perfectly well on a 40 wash. If it's a particularly heavy load I'll stick in some soda crystals.

FBThree can you explain the bicarb bit? I use the ecoballs and am looking for something that will take away the damp/stale smell that remains, would this work and if so how would I use it?

Sorry to be so long in answering - only just realised I had a question outstanding!

I use bicarb in the washing powder drawer to take away smells, e.g. when a towel has been left sitting damp. I put about a third of a small pot of bicarb in and just run the wash as normal. You may not need so much but I haven't experimented!

i was using the persil liquitabs occasionaly (normally use powder) a few years ago, and my machine pump broke, when the repair man came out he told me not to use the liquitabs as the gel casing (you know the bit i mean) never fully desolves and goes all gungy in your pipes even if you clean on the hottest wash. he said after a while it starts to stink and nothing gets rid of the smell.

He said he has been called out loads of times to smelly machines and this was 99% of the time the cause. He said lots of people had to buy a new machine or put up with the smell!!!!

I never use them now in my own machine!!! I did use them when i had bought them on bogof in the machine on holiday in florida though ;)

I was wondering if teh fairy dishwasher luiqitab things do the same to your dishwasher so i havent bought those cos im to scared to!!!!

I'd say steer clear of liquitabs as well. I was a sort of brand snob until recently but bought a huge box of tesco value bio washing powder and it works fine. For smellies (gym stuff especially) I use half and half with bicarb of soda. This works amazingly well, even for DH's expensive running gear where I can't use fabric conditioner or tumble dry cos it damages the fabric. This stuff lies around damp quite a lot and the bicarb still seems to do the trick!

On black washing powder, again I've been using tesco and it's fine but if you want a specialist product, Lidl do a washing liquid for blacks that seemed good to me and was I think £1.99 for a litre? 1.5 litres maybe?

On the dishwasher tabs, I think Lidl's are by far the best buy, just their regular £1.99 for 30 ones. These dissolve easily even at low temperatures which is where most fall down for me. And can be easily snapped in half with no consequences at all!

I have to be careful what I use after discovering that most things irritate my skin. So I started shopping around for non-bio products. I use Tesco or Asda non-bio liquid and it works fantastically well. Not much it won't bring out and, if needed, I use either a little Oxy or soak in some value bio powder before washing.

I too was told a) never to use liquitabs and b) not to put liquid in your machine drawer for the same reason. So I use one of the in-wash balls.

When I did use any product, I found that colour liquid is fine for black items.

  • I have just bought myself some Ariel Liquitabs for the first time and I personally am hooked on the smell - same for the Persil gel tablets which I was using before. However i'm a bit alarmed by the fact that most posts state they can damage your washing machine - didn't think of that - maybe something to do with the fact that when I bought my house they left the washing machine so never paid for it in the first place! I'd better think twice as being on a low income I don't fancy forking out for plumbers and such like! I have two young children and I too have been searching for decent but cheap non-bio products.
