1st time here....Q about reclaiming tax.

Hello every one!

I have just discovered that I have been paying Basic Rate tax on my salary (a job I've been at for just over two years! Yes, what a wally). Now, I've called Inland Rev and they are aware and have swapped codes and are sending me out papers. When I asked the lady will I get the money refunded she couldn't really give me an answer. My maths isn't great but I'm pretty sure that equals a fair amount of money! So, my question is, how do I claim this back? Do I have to contact my payroll dept or the IV again? I'll be pretty peeved off if I can't get it back! Also, if i do get it back, will it be slowly paid back monthly on my salary or will i get a cheque for one lump?

Thanks muchly peeps! :rotfl:

Sam

This year's overpayment will be refunded directly into your wages as soon as the new tax code is used.

For the last tax year and presumably part of the previous one, you can ask for a cheque for the total refund.

When you say HMRC are sending you out papers, is this a claim form for the overpaid tax for the previous years or is it simply your new tax code?

The claim for tax years 2011/12 and 2012/13 has to go through HMRC.

Hi Jem16! Thanks for your reply. Sorry, I should have explained better, the letters are just stating my new Tax Code which will 944L until April and then 1000T afterwards.
Ok, so for now do I need to do anything as such? I find this sort of stuff so confusing. Argh!
    Cheers

Why 1000T? I would have expected that to be 1000L.

You need to get phone up HMRC and specifically request a refund for the tax years 2011/12 and 2013 as you believe you have overpaid. They may already be putting that through after your phone call but it's worth checking. Make sure to ask them for a cheque refund for the whole amount. They should be able to tell you how much the refund will be over the phone as they should have all the details.

    Hi Jem16

I'm not sure why its 1000T? Thats what the lady said?

Ok, Monday I will call them and say I would like to claim back for 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. Thank you Jem!

It's not the 1000 I'm querying as that's in line with the £10k personal allowance from April 6th.

It's the T suffix that I don't understand. That usually means there's something in your tax code that need reviewing. Perhaps the £10k personal allowance isn't set in stone yet. You could always ask them when you phone.
