Want to repair credit score for new mortgage

Me and my partner recently bought our second home, our mortgage is 155000, we purchased the house for 160000 and I believe it to be worth around 195000 now. Our mortgage is interest only (2 years) and has another 14 months to run.
I went self employed about a month ago and we now have a baby so my partner only works part time.
Trouble with my credit is that I am paying off about 17,000 through Payplan @ 177 a month and belive I have defaults on my score. I just want to get a decent mortgage deal in 14 months time as GE Money have really taken us for a ride. Our first mortgage was with them, and according to our broker they were the only ones who would lend for our second home, so even though we stuck with them they still charged us 6000 early repayment.
So what do I do? Take out a loan and consolidate the 17000? try and remortgage? or a secured loan? My debt probs are from a while ago, and for about the last 2 years we've not missed a mortgage payment or any utility bills. What do I do?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I`m aware you can not change your credit score if you have defaults on it,they usually last for 6 years on file.
That may be just CCJ`s,so I could be wrong.
Might be a good idea to have a browse through some threads about credit scoring as they will give you a good idea of how things work.Or even google it.
Sorry I couldn`t of been more help.Debt Free Date:10/09/2007 :j :money:0
