Laptop won't boot but has power

Options
Hi everybody,

My laptop has seemingly given up the ghost. I press the on button, the power light comes on and the hard drive light flashes once and turns off. The fan kicks in for 30 seconds and then that's as far as it gets. The screen doesn't flicker or anything.

I have taken the battery out and held the power button down for 30 seconds to rid the laptop of static, before turning it on without the battery in - still no joy.

I've also left it to charge for an hour, tried again but still nothing.

When I was last using it it was almost out of charge before I shut it down. Prior to this, it's been working absolutely fine. Anything else I can try?

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NS30E, it's about 6 years old and I had the motherboard replaced around two years ago. Please help!

Have you tried pressing F8 as it boots and going in to safe mode?

Yeah, I've also tried all the function keys, or ctrl alt del. Nothing's happening and I'm sure it isn't the screen because I'd be able to hear it whirring into life and there's none of that. A trip to the PC people I think :(

Can you access the BIOS? Press F2 on startup.

This will tell us if the hardrive is recognised and what the boot order is.

Doesn't sound like it, but just to check - can you see anything on the dark screen if you shine a torch onto it?

    (With power ON of course).

Get it? Now use it before you lose it.
    or - Try
using it - not losing it. ;)

Try taking the battery out, then removing the power lead. Leave for an hour, then connect the mains lead and power on. I followed that sequence when mine when awol after the battery ran out and it worked.
