Bathroom sink starting to whiff

:( Over the past few days I have noticed my bathroom sink has been a tad whiffy, its not too bad yet, but i'd prefer not to get to that stage.

Its not overly used, I live by myself and its cleaned regularly. I've tried leaving bleach round the sink to filter down over night on a couple of occassions, but within half an hour i can still smell the whiff.:o

Apart from going to Tesco and buying a sink/drain unblocker, it there a cheaper alternative - white vinegar perhaps? I've still yet to buy this magic stuff, but its on my list for today, don't think Tesco sell large amounts though.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Bay

If you put bicarb down the plughole first and pour vinegar over it and stand back it will fizz up and clear any nasties lurking down there - also check your sink overflow as that can be a bit pongy sometimes.

I have that, my kids have an habit of cleaning their teeth and although they run the tap a bit when they rinse their mouths out, the majority of the foam is still in the pipework still in the bathroom (the pipework is quite long as it runs along the side of one wall, under the bath before it leaves the building) and it sort of ferments.... so each night when i clean my own teeth - i let the tap run for a few minutes which flushes the pipework out and i dont get the whiff. However, once a week i pour bleach down, just to make sure it kills the germs.
  • Sorry for sounding so very girlie, but how do I check the sink overflow?
  • Well i've just done the bicarb and vinegar trick and it did half fizz up!!

Opened the window to clear the vinegar smell so we shall see how the smell fares when i get home later.

If not i shall have to ask for sink overflow advice.

Thank you soontobejobless, hope your luck changes if your name is anything to go by.

I usually put the bicarb vinegar down then leave it (I guess this is what you've done if you can still smell it). When I go back to it (usually leave it overnight) I just sluice it with boiling water straight from the kettle, not sure what this does but they always tell you to do that with Mr Muscle type stuff so I've always done it with vin/bi. It seems to keep it clear for ages.

  • oops i might have to repeat it later then cos i've just run cold water to clear the excess from the basin, i shall see after my late shift tonight

    thanks for that tip though.

Could I just ask how much bicarb & vinegar to use ?

Also can you do this in a shower tray ?

    Thanks

About 4 tablespoons of bicarband a little more of vinegar - let it fizz - leave for 1 hour then pour HOT water down plug.
