Student loan company trying to claw back their statement error

I've just received a letter from student loans company advising that in 2005/06 financial year they made an error on my statement and "you have received more credit for payments made in the tax year than you actually repaid in that year". This credit has then basically been displayed and carried over on my balance ever since. The letter however says that they are now going to take this amount back off my balance and I have to pay it back. Given that this was their error and 8 years have passed this seems really unfair. Any advice on how I could appeal this? Thanks!
