Hi all

Just received an email from The Book People-
As a company that believes encouraging children to read for pleasure is vital, we are delighted to bring to your attention a new programme designed to help promote reading in Year 7 children. We very much hope that this scheme will encourage secondary school-aged children to develop a reading habit that will last a lifetime.

The Booked Up initiative will give a free book to every eleven-year-old across the country.

To check, visit the website at www.bookedup.org.uk to see if your school has registered. If they haven't then please pass this link on to the appropriate contact at your school.

Hope that helps. also says:

Booked Up is designed to encourage reading for pleasure and to maintain the development of reading levels between Years 6 and 7 as children make the difficult transition from primary to secondary education.
Booktrust is supported by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) with an allocation of £2.78m which makes the programme free for all participating schools and allows each child to make his or her own choice of book from a selection of 12 titles. A Booktrust panel - including children's book experts, professionals from the library sector, booksellers, teachers, journalists, and children's book reviewers - selected the books, which are ideal for reading for pleasure, represent a suitable degree of diversity, use language well and reflect various styles.
