Filing tax return 3 months after 31 Jan?

in Cutting tax
Hello, wondering/hoping if someone can help me.
I finally received a letter from HMRC this week saying it's time to complete my tax return for the 2012/13 tax year (I registered for online SA in October 2013).
The letter is dated 23 January 2014.
It says I must submit my tax return by "31 January 2014 if you file online (or three months after the date of this letter if that's later)...".
So am I correct in thinking I have until 23 April 2014 to submit my return online? Or do I have to submit it tomorrow (31 Jan)?
I'm a bit confused and don't want to have to pay any penalties if it is tomorrow.
Thanks in advance :-)

This page states that exceptions for the January 31st date are rare, but they do exist, and if a letter from HMRC tells you it's later than January 31st then you have an exception. I think you're correct that you have until April 23rd.
That said, may as well fill it in asap as it's fairly straight forward

Thanks - I may give them a call today, just to double-double check that I have until 23 April!
I'm pretty much there with the return, it's the first time I've completed one though so wouldn't mind an extra few days to make sure I've got it right :-)0 -

My OH got his UTR/paper return late and so has 3 months from the date of the letter rather than today to get his return in.
I suspect there is going to be lots of staggered deadlines this year with the child benefit debacle and lots of new people joining SA.
Enjoy the extended deadline, I hope you didn't try to call today, you can't get through easily at the best of times on the busiest day of the year ....We Made-it-3 on 28/01/11 with birth of our gorgeous DD.0 -

I suspect that you're wrong, and that the only extended deadlines will be the short extension for those who applied for a UTR late and the longer one where HMRC have decided late on that a return is required. Anyone caught by the child benefit repayment has the responsibility themeself to register for SA in advance of the deadline, and failure to do so will see penalties applied.0 -

This has concerned me as well and a few people I know on my Facebook selling pages believed they had extensions but have taken advice and been told they do not. The requirement to complete a tax return was complicit in the new CB rules, it isn't a sudden change that requires HMRC to request a return.
Personally if I were in this situation I would double check with HMRC and get it confirmed that you are extended, just to be on the safe side.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
