Keyboard problem - and now can't log into computer

This is for a friend of my son's.
He has done "something" to the keyboard of his computer (a desktop) and the letters on the keyboard weren't the letters that were being typed. e.g. press H and a different letter appeared on the screen.
He thought he'd be clever and restart the computer to clear the problem, but unfortunately it didn't restore the original keyboard settings and now he can't log in, because he doesn't know what keys to press!!
He has tried a different keyboard as well as an on-screen keyboard (I didn't know such things existed!!) and the problem is still there.
Does anyone have any idea what he can do to restore his keyboard setting - given that he can't actually log in!?

If he presses a key on the keyboard does the incorrect letter show up consistently or is it random?
It could be one of several things- The wrong keyboard layout is selected in the control panel.
- The keyboard has FN button - (press FN->Numlock keys simultaneously to turn off)
- Virus - run a scan when you login
You mentioned that even the on-screen keyboard does the same - refer to the above sections 2 and 3 for a possible reason.

If you have a backup you could do a full system restore/roll back or reinstall windows completely0 -
Thank you - will pass that on and hope it helps

All you need to do is boot from Hiren's bootcd, use the NT Password Remover utility on it to remove the windows logon password. The pc will then boot direct into windows and he can diagnose the fault from there

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple
