OMG - Beanfeast - HOW much salt!!??

Just bought some beanfeast to try, as I don't like the gristle in mince, and I assumed (silly me) that it would be pretty healthy (and cheap!)
Planned to eke it out a bit and make some lovely OS lasagne, chilli etc.
Well, I started to cook up a pan of chilli beanfeast for OH and I, I noticed it smelt salty, and when we tried it it was ridiculously salty (we probably can taste it more as we don't add salt to cooking unless vital, as OH has high blood pressure). 'This must be a packaging mistake' we thought.
Not so! When checking the packet there is over 3 grammes per half pack - this is the entire daily allowance for an adult! My oh could easily polish off a bag (if it tasted like food and not road grit!) - 6 grammes!
Checked the bolognaise style and it's 4 grammes per half pack!
Beanfeast might taste nice to some but it's NOT healthy. Threw the lot away and had a poached egg with our HM oven chips!

wow thanks for that, im a veggie dont use the beanfeast that often but if we are going on hoilday or I need a cheap fix i will buy a packet. Gonna avoid it now for good

It's worth not giving up altogether on TVP type products. You can buy plain stuff and cook it like mince, adding your own gravy/stock/tomato/ herbs etc. Or you can use lentils for the same dishes. Green or brown ones are best in place of mince.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

I've just bought a packet of Beanfeast chilli for going away to the caravan next week - I'm going to be paranoid about the salty flavour now! It does seem an awful lot of salt doesn't it?
When I 1st turned veggie I used to eat Beanfeast all the time - now I only get it if going camping or whatever as it's easy to take with us.
re Realeat VegeMince - my local Asda and Tesco stock it. It is by far the best veggie mince I think. I use it all the time for making chilli or lasagne, and my dp (commited carnivore!) can't tell the difference!0 -
I used to use TVP and beanfeast quite a lot when we were veggies but we stopped when we realised about GM and the gender bending effects of soya. Imo it is best to use a little top quality mince and bulk it out with onions, mushrooms, beans and veg
we got sucked in by the soya industry hype0
