Handing in notice on Friday - what's my leaving date?

Hi all. I've had enough with my job, been there too long and no prospects.

I'm on a "one month" notice contract.

I'm going to resign on Friday, the 31st January. But there's no 31st in February (or 30th or 29th!). So should my last day be the last day of Feb instead then, the 28th?

Notice starts the day after you give it so for 1 month that should be 1 Feb to last day inclusive.

Didn't know that. So in my situation would this mean that my notice period runs for one month from the 1st so my last day would be the 28th anyway?

Hand in your notice, then have a grown-up conversation with your boss where you propose a finishing date.

So 1 months notice is 1st-1st, 5th to 5th etc, what would happen if you gave notice in on 30th Jan? would the month run to 28th Feb or tip over into March?
Only asking as im curious by the way.

If I handed in my notice I would assume it was four weeks.

Specify the last day you will be working in your resignation.

Would take a real sh!te boss to quibble over a day or two.

Except for the case of handing in notice on 31 January in a non-leap year (as for the OP), if you handed in notice of four weeks when your contract said a month you would be in the wrong.

It's not about quibbling over a day or two: it's about abiding by your contract.

Depends on your contract really. I've worked for a company where notice was of a month (as a minimum) but the month had to be a complete calendar month, specified as being from the 1st. So if you handed in your notice, the month's notice ran from the 1st of the following month.

However, if the contract simply says a month then handing in notice on 30 January would mean that the notice would run from 31 January to 28 February (29 in a leap year).
