What do you want to see mentioned in this year's Budget?
I would like to see mortgage interest tax relief removed for mortgages on residential property along with the wear and tear allowance i.e. where the property is held personally or via a corporate envelope. I believe this creates a significant negative distortion in the market
Currently taxpaying tenants are effectively subsidising landlords with a tax benefit as well as paying their mortgage. Therefore in the case of people claiming housing benefit for rented accomodation landlords are not only receiving rent from the state but also a tax deduction for the interest they pay as well.
This tax subsidy could be better used elsewhere, for example as a deduction against tax for employees for travel to work.
Raise minimum wage to at least living wage level and raise tax allowance to at least the same. Reduce VAT to 15% and better enforce taxation of big business to pay for it. Renationalise the utilities and the railways. Bring public services back in house to stop the likes of Serco and G4S ripping us off. That would do for a start, but there's plenty more that I'd like to see.
