Valentine's is coming, but has using vouchers finally broken through the last taboo? Is it acceptable to use a 2for1 voucher on a first date? We asked this last year - let's see if it's changed...

Imagine Ollie asks Samantha to dinner on a first date, saying he'll pay. When the bill comes, he pulls out a 2for1 voucher – what advice would you give Samantha?

I think it would be best if either mentioned as part of the invitation "I've got a voucher for this amazing place...." or if payment took place away from the table so that it wasn't an issue. I think it would be a bit weird if someone suggested a place for a date and then produced a reason for being there which hadn't been mentioned and which had nothing to do with the quality/desirability of the place
  • Anyone that expects their date to pay based purely on their gender doesn't deserve a date in the first place.

Any man/woman who thinks the other person using a voucher to pay a bill is cheap/tight is not worth it!!!

The fact the other person is paying in the first place should matter. Also if thinking long term; 1) it is the though that matters 2) the person does not waste money that matters 3) Would you want to be long term with a person who just blows money and no long term plans??

IMHO, As long as the person has not chosen the place for being cheap and a voucher option then why would it matter? Even big name hotels nowadays do 2 for 1 deals. I would have thought the idea of saving money which would allow another similar nice time spent together at the vendors cost should matter!!! its the time together that matters not the cost or who paid and how!!

I would be happy if someone dumped me just because I used vouchers to treat them at a great place and time. as obviously they did not appreciate my effort and me. He/She was just appreciating my money....

If it where me paying and using a voucher, I would take the bill over to the till/servers station/bar and pay there, rather than doing it at the table, so the other person wouldn't know I was using a voucher.

Either that, or would take a look at the bill and ask my guest a simple question

"How fast can you run in those heels?"

i'd think wow this person is good with their money, definitely like me. It'd impress me more than turn me off!

  • if someone was paying for my meal (regardless of gender), and they used a 2 for 1 voucher, that would raise my estimation of them. taking easy steps to save money is smart and in line with how i live, so it would make me more likely to go on a second date.

likewise, if i was paying and my date thought less of me for using a voucher, then i'd realise that we aren't compatible people and it would probably be best to call it quits at that stage.

Using a voucher is a non issue, going to a restaurant on valentine's night is sheer madness and about as romantic as a stroll around lake windermere in a howling gale.
  • My man of nearly two years is taking me for a special offer steak night at a fabulous restaurant near where we live and I think it's WONDERFUL! He'd never heard of MSE or Surveys for vouchers or Vouchercloud and couldn't believe how I always had a voucher for everything (whenever I buy anything my friends know it's coz I had a voucher). However having been bled dry in his divorce he was living practically hand to mouth and now we email each other with various offers all the time and are almost disappointed when we have to make a purchase without a voucher - all money saved can be used for something else - so why not?

I'm not fussed. If he uses a voucher, that's his choice.

  • I have no problem with punters being fleeced for Valentines day, becasue my wedding anniversary is days afterwards, and the current Mrs BoP loves them cheap chocolate hearts and teddies!
