Cycling Scotland Ad banned by the ASA for being "socially irresponsible"

I think cycle helmets are socially irresponsible, personally. There is no proof they improve cycle safety, but otoh they definitely make cycling appear more dangerous. The fact is a cycle helmet is no more useful than a walking or driving helmet.
I would sooner go to jail than wear one.
Well.... It's always a strongly debated subject. I always wear one, BUT drivers do seem to think that they will protect a cyclist from being crushed by a car and that cyclists not wearing one deserve what they get. Research has shown that drivers on average will pass a helmet wearing cyclist MUCH more closely than otherwise.
Fact is, they're only designed to protect the head from the road during a fall at <12 mph.

Although I personally believe that the overriding factor is that a cyclist with a helmet on, will seem (at a subconscious level) to be an object/obstacle rather than a human being.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Without creating yet another done-to-death helmet debate you do realise the 12mph is vertical speed (due to gravity) and not horizontal speed (of travel)? Any object falls at a standard speed no matter how fast it travels forwards.
It is, of course (and should remain) personal choice, but choices should be informed, and the <12mph thing is often misinterpreted. It's only numbers.0 -

It seems many drivers believe that a cycling helmet is actually some kind of forcefield that protects the cyclists from anything.
i've seen lots of posts on forums where a cyclist was crushed, and people going on about how they would be still alive if they has a helmet (ignoring the fact they were already wearing a helmet)0
