Performance ratings

Hi everybody.
I was just wondering what peoples thoughts on performance ratings were?
If you are unhappy with your rating are you allowed to seek advice from colleagues on whether the rating is worth challenging? Or is this frowned upon?
Should colleagues talk about their own ratings if they so wish or does this breach any employment laws/rules?
Thanks.

Performance ratings are calculated in many different ways. Your first step should be to speak to your manager, find out how it is worked out, and then decide whether you wish to challenge it or to find ways to improve it.
There is nothing in law to stop you discussing it, but your company may have a policy against it.0 -
If your performance rating is linked to your pay you can argue that there is a legal right to discuss it with colleagues for the purposes of equal pay comparison, even if your company has a policy against it.
If you have been given a performance rating you should also have been provided with an explanation of how this was arrived at and how you can improve it.0 -
If you're doing the same job as a colleague the criteria for rating the performance should be the same and applied consistently. Was the rating done as part of an appraisal and did you agree?0

Essentially most of my colleagues are doing the same job but maybe working on small projects.
Ratings are not salary related but can affect bonuses.......0
