Interesting topic and contributions ( with some exceptions)

    We perceive what people spend

We guess at what they earn, based on that perception

We don't know how much they have borrowed

At various times in my life I have been poor, middle and reasonably well off ( judged by my own subjective criteria)

I spend £3,500 a month and this gives me a comfortable lifestyle ,with no worries, that I am happy with.

The balance I both save and gift -some to family, some to charity

I think this statement says it all. It encapsulates all that is wrong with this country. The Boden set, like you, and people living in council estates not far from you, could be living on different planets. I fear for the future of this country with class divisions so brutally set out. I remember a programme - on channel 4 I believe - where people of different classes were forced to exchange families for a week or two. Only in Britain could something like this happen and end up as a hilarious comedy.

Boden? Possibly second hand on eBay for my kids. Like I said, Gap and only then with the 30% off voucher :) I grew up in a frugal home.

It might be a cliche but my dad grew up in a very working class family in Preston, studied, worked, scrimped and sacrificed to give us a nice home and good ecucation. I've worked hard and to get to where I am now (and my salary is still only in the 'low' bracket of a lot of other poster's scale for London), and of course paid a lot of tax along the way.

Would the world be better off if I didn't work and claimed benefits for me and my kids? What better way to help people less fortunate than me, than to take out less than I put in?

I think a lot of people here lie about just how wealthy they are.

Maybe, but not particularly in this thread.

I didn't see many posters stating what they earn or how wealthy they are, as we were simply asked a 'perception' of low/medium/high. I never stated I was in the latter. ;)

I was posting on Tancred's point, Mayonnaise, that everyone on here is rich and therefore their perceptions of income level is incorrect or not interesting information.

I wasn't specifically accusing anyone on this thread or other of any other of lying, just saying that my perception of the probable income level of available participants is far lower than Tancred's.

I think the theory most of us have alluded to is its probably pretty rare to feel the latter until you really are very comfortably in that bracket (whatever that is!).

This being because its hard to feel we have enough while we see what we don't have along side what we do. Our perception of 'high income' is often one in which life's frustrations are removed, not just upgraded or lessened.

LiR, I've seldom felt as rich as I did at sixteen, even when I've had a lot more money as income. I do believe that if you're not careful expenditure just increases to more than match your income.

You can earn huge amounts, in theory, but still end up afraid the entire house of cards will come down any second.

Perceptions of your own wealth really depend to a large part on your expenditure and it is possible to spend a lot of money on things you don't really want or need, and feel poor.
