Postal order is fine, don't forget to send recorded. I believe this letter is correct.

    Dear Sir or Madam
    Account number - xxxxxxxxxx
I am writing with regard to the debt you have recently contacted me regarding on (date).

I do not acknowledge responsibility for this debt but instead require you to substantiate this data at your earliest convenience:

    1. You must supply me with a true copy of the alleged agreement you refer to. This is my right under your obligation to supply a copy of the agreement under the legislation contained within s.78 (1) Consumer Credit Act 1974 (s.77 (1) for fixed sum credit). Your obligation also extends to providing a statement of account. I enclose a £1 postal order in payment of the statutory fee, PO Serial Number xxxxxxx.

    2. Any deed of assignment if the debt was sold on
I would request that this data is provided to myself within the next 28 days, if you are unable to provide this data then I must insist that you cease pursuing this unsubstantiated debt.
    Yours faithfully

There's a template letter HERE (3rd post down, by Crown).

They contain pretty much the same info - I think Crown's has an extra bit if you are intending to state that the debt is statute barred (if no payments have been made for 6 years), but I think as long as you clearly state that you don't acknowledge any debt, and quote the bit about the consumer credit act, and advise them of the deadline for responding, then it will be fine.

It means that the recipient of the letter cannot use the letter against you in future in a court case - ie by saying that the letter in some way associates you with the debt.

Well, that at least is what I understand it means, however I am sure a legal eagle on here will give the formal explanation!!!
