Thanks for the feedback. We've been warned that the Tioga pass might be closed, but also advised that it might not be. (We're going at the beginning of November.) As well as fingers crossed we'll have a Plan B which misses out part of the trip and a Plan C which will be completely different. We're allowing 12 days for that part of our stay so there's scope for alterations.

Roonaldo, yes we'll be driving. We're planning Highway 1. We managed to get about half way between SF and LA (from the SF end) many, many years ago.
Early November you might be lucky (your OP said mid Nov- early Dec). For previous years closing times see http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tiogaopen.htm for an idea...You're doing a lot of driving in 12 days though - I'd consider a day trip flight from LV to the Grand Canyon, we did this and it was spectacular - it'd be even more so in the snow I'd imagine! And saved loads of driving

    Hire car. Just drive.

Possibly the most beautiful corner of the world. Don't skip Utah. Moab, Canyonlands etc.

Sorry for confusing by saying mid November - we changed things after posting / before booking as we realised a bit more time would be very beneficial.

Thanks for that link. I hadn't come across it yet and it looks very useful.

We'd love to do the flight you suggested - it sounds absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately I don't think funds will stretch quite that far! I'd love if they did! (I'm not complaining, though.)

Sounds great, but time and money come into play! We'll see what we can manage ;).
    . . .I did not speak out

    Then they came for me
And there was no one left
    To speak out for me..

Problem is, at that time of year, lack of daylight.

Seriously can hamper sightseeing (Unless you're a star gazer:cool: )

Yes, though they'd get more daylight than in the UK at the same time of year. Sunset at the Grand Canyon would be about 5:30pm early Nov. Earlier in Las Vegas and California as they are an hour behind - but you could just get up earlier!

It might be quite nice to see sunset at Grand Canyon!

We are currently in San Diego and driving to Palm Springs tomorrow for 3 nights. Weather in San Diego is fab and warm. We took the Cunard Queen Elizabeth over from Southampton to New York then sleeper train to Chicago for 3 nights (very cold!) then another sleeper train to LA. The trains were great fun! We are flying home from LA in 10 days.

If you have the time consider a Cunard crossing to USA - seriously it was only a little more expensive than a 1 way flight to NYC. You could always then fly internally to Palm Springs.
