Scarily, in response to the spam some people are suggesting that the first posts all all new users should be checked and approved by MSE before they even appear or you can post more. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5194807 Personally I find that idea utterly foul, as it would restrict one of the fundamental things about the boards which is that people in need of help can join and post for it immediately. People who are suicidal, bailiffs knocking at the door.

Fortunately MSE do not seem to be prepared to consider it, which is just as well as it would wreck the forums more than any spam ever could.

Like you fermi I don't think first posts should be checked. It could have a devastating affect on people who need help immediately.
Would MSE have someone checking posts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? People do post for help over the evening/weekend/overnight.

I know the spam is really annoying and needs dealing with but I hope they won't ever need to do this.
