Council Tax uncollected

Hi all,

Last year I applied for a halt in council tax payment as the buliding was undergoing major repair work and was uninhabitable. This was granted for a period of 3 months after which they sent me a letter of confirmation that repayments would restart as discussed. Now 10 moths down the line I have noticed that they haven't collected anything since.

Please could someone advise where I stand with this. I am now expecting a huge bill.

Regards,

  • You're liable for the payments, you won't be able to argue that it's the councils responsibility to collect (you can pay online, or over the phone, or via cheque) and you won't lose out by having to pay up, because it's money you should have been paying anyway.

the assumption here is that you keep a budget. when the "huge bill" arrives just pay it from the monies that will still be in your bank account for "uncollected payments" - problem sorted.

    however.

if you have assumed the monies were being taken then 10 months is a VERY long time to have NEVER checked your bank statements/balance.

what have you done with the money that was remaining in your bank account each month?

what kind of help/advice were you looking for specifically?

Better to start paying again now rather than wait for the summons to come ...

I think I would write to them questioning why they had decided not to take any payments. If they fail to reply give them notice that you will assume that no charge has been made.

It won't achieve anything in the end, but I'd enjoy winding them up a bit and forcing them to admit it's their mistake. :)

  • Most will offer installments, as it's way less grief than taking you to court. They'd rather have a willing payer
So many glitches, so little time...
  • Thanks for the feedback all, particularly blaming the moths and winding up the council. :)
