timeframes UTR - Activation code?

Options
I finally received my UTR but the letter says I also need an activation code before i can complete SA.

What is the approx timeframe the activation code? Does it take as long as the UTR?

It won't take as long as the UTR, but I very much doubt you'll get it in time for the deadline. An accountant would be able to file on your behalf using commercial software, though obviously there will be a cost associated.

  • What date is on the top of your tax return document? Mine was dated 30th December, so I have until 30th March to file my return and pay my unexpected tax bill. You get 3 months to complete your tax return so if you received it late you get longer than this week's deadline.

It's supposed to be 7 days but experience is showing me that it is taking longer than that.

anyone who registers for the online service and requests an activation code (or a replacement activation code) between 22/01/2014 and 31/01/2014 will be granted an extension to the 15th February in which to submit their tax return.

If you registered for self assessment recently and you need to complete the 2012/13 tax return, and your paper tax return/notice to file was issued to you after 25 October 2013, then you have 3 months and 1 week to submit your tax return so the 31 January deadline will not apply.

PLUS, if you are one of those who has only been issued with a tax return/notice to file since 25/10/2014 then you do not have to submit online, you can download and fill in the paper tax return if you dont already have a paper version.

  • Not that I don't believe you dori2o but could you link me to anything about the 15th of Feb extension as I can't find anything about it.

That extension would save me the £100 as I registered for self employed months and months ago but I didn't realize I had to register for something else too. I went to sort it all out on Sunday and realized I didn't have a login or had activated anything. So I registered on Sunday and am awaiting the code. If I had another couple of weeks to do it, that would be amazing.

I work on the telephone helplines and I can assure you that the guidance is valid.

It isn't advertised via the HMRC website etc, but the temporary guidance regarding the extension were provided to HMRC staff on 22/01/2014. If you are in doubt call the SA helpline who will confirm.

But HMRC will issue a late filing penalty and you'll have to appeal against it.

So it can't be relied upon then can it? What happens when the taxpayer gets the penalty notice, appeals on those grounds, and then gets the office jobsworth who refuses to waive the penalty and insists on seeing the legislation/HMRC webpage where the "concession" was advertised.

Couldn't happen could it? Well, yes, it regularly happens. It's a fact that half the HRMC staff don't know what's happening with the other half.

But, one good piece of advice from Dori, give them a ring, get it confirmed over the phone, and make a note of the time and date of your phone call and preferably the name or some other identification of the person telling you. At least you'll then have something to quote back to them when you send in your appeal.
  • Excellent. Thanks guys.
