Too good to be true job?

Hi all.

I have recently been told that we will be made redundant, I work for an education company providing learning to adults.

I wanted something in the same area and have had a telephone interview with another company about doing the same job I am doing now essentially but I would travel to customers instead of them coming to me. I have got to the second round which is a face to face interview on Wednesday.

Whilst on the phone they mentioned that earning potential was high, and my fuel would be paid for and bookings for these students would be made for me 15-20 per week and it was my job to get them into some training or work. Then they told me it would be classed as a self employed position.
Now my question is simply, is this a good idea? Any thoughts, questions id be happy to answer.

Regards

Tbh, this doesn't sound like genuine self-employment but an employer avoiding employee responsibilities.

Indications that a worker is your employee

An individual is likely to be employed by you if most of the following statements apply to them:
    • you can tell them what work to do, as well as how, where and when to do it
    • they have to do their work themselves
    • you can move the worker from task to task
    • they are contracted to work a set number of hours
    • they get a regular wage or salary, even if there is no work available
    • they have benefits such as paid leave or a pension as part of their contract
    • you pay them overtime pay or bonus payments
    • they manage anyone else who works for you

Indications that a worker is self-employed

If any of these statements applies, your worker is likely to be self-employed:
    • they can hire someone else to do the work you've given them, or take on helpers at their own expense
    • they can decide what work is done and when, where, or how it is done
    • you pay them an agreed fixed price - it doesn't depend on how long the job takes to finish
    • they can make a loss or a profit
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
  • So I would just be classed as employed and working commission only?

Does it sound a bit risky, I'm not too sure about it but if it was rubbish nobody would do it, is my reasoning.

No, you would be classed as SE, no holiday pay, no pension provision, no accruing service towards redundancy, no potential occupational sick pay.............................................

Individuals do it out of ignorance and/ or desperation. I wouldn't bite.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.

It doesnt sound very good, and its not self employed, the employer seems to be getting out of paying tax/ni.
  • I think it might be sales. I.e you get commission for getting people to buy courses etc

HMRC have a term for it.

    Fraudulent.

Sorry OP but I wouldn't just walk away, I be running.
Then I'd be ringing in their name, address & contract info along with the "offer" they'd made. Confidentially of course.

This ^^ It sounds like you would be selling training rather than delivering it, like the high cost IT courses that guarantee a job at the end, but the training is useless and the jobs rarely materialise. Have you Googled the name of the company?

run away...I bet you have to buy some equipment of them too :rotfl:

sorry OP but if this job was so easy why not provide a basic wage! they know it will be next to impossible to earn from this, that is why it's zero pay and commision only.
