Self employment tax allowances

Hi, I work from home, using room as office - and although I've more or less got to grips with allowable business expenses - I'm more unsure about capital allowances.
I had a lot of building work done in 2012/13 - some of which affected my office - such as re-wiring, installation of central heating (including radiator in office) and a new roof (as the old one had expired and was leaking, including in my office).
After a few hours on the HMRC website and various others.... I think that a proportion of repairs/maintenance are allowable - but that improvements are not. The HMRC also cites painting the exterior as a legitimate and allowable household cost.
On this basis, I think the re-wiring and the roof are probably allowable - as they were essential - and basically replacements - but the central heating may not be.
Another section of HRMC says lighting and heating systems are allowable - but I think this may relate to business premises only - not a house as office.
If anyone could add any clarity - it would be much appreciated.
