Factually everyone would agree that 50% is more than 45%..

But would everyone agree that one is too high or not high enough?

I think your point has defeated itself.

Tell you what. You explain exactly how we quantify the value of every job (which I'm saying is a ludicrous & impossible suggestion) & I'll give you a response. Other than that don't expect one as I have no interest in discussing this concept that has nothing whatsoever to do with my original point. Feel free to discuss it with others if they find it interesting though.

The comments under the BBC article are quite surprising:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25894312

If you toggle on to all comments then sort by highest rated, literally every comment on the front page slates this move. The first time I've ever seen a BBC article with a 100% anti-Labour response.

Could be that Balls has got this badly wrong. His credibility must be even less than I thought.

Lol don't lecture me on fairness, your idea of fairness is screwing as much money as possible out of anyone richer than you because you're so jealous of them.

Are you volunteering to give up 50% of YOUR income lol? I bet you'd be squealing in outrage if someone suggested that.

Another one for the ignore bin, sometimes it takes remarkably few posts for someone to prove they have nothing to say that's worth hearing :T

I would imagine that pretty soon you will have everybody who disagrees with you on ignore.

I'm not sure he'd care about my response to be honest, since he's already decided that his perception on what is "fair" is the correct one.

Nevermind that it ignores some unforgettable truths which he probably doesn't want to consider lest it makes him look bad.

I think it's too easy to get blinded by double standards, and this is a comment which is as applicable to me as any other.

I standby the points I've brought to this discussion, but there's only so long I can press a point against someone who doesn't want to hear it. :)

Once you factor in NI and loss of tax free allowance it is much higher especially at the threshold. A really silly idea to create this tax level. If anything it needs to come back down to 40% to be even slightly competitive with other countries.

It also giving up the tax free allowance. It is a really silly tax because it forces older people to retire early, it stops these higher earners coming to the country, it provides an incentive to move away and it also increases tax avoidance. Tax intake goes down and it harms the economy. Why on earth does the government need to take that much money from one person isn't right.

Perhaps some of those people behind the scenes are directly involved in organising the deals, contracts and logistics.

Maybe some of them play a very real role in the training and coaching of the supposed important Rooney.

Rooney is the public face, he has a high profile and achieves the visible result (scoring the odd goal). But he isn't the be and end all of what goes into achieving that objective.

Football is a team sport isn't it? And team work doesn't simply refer to the 11 (or so) players on the field, but everyone who is involved in putting that team together. Be they a celebrity or not.
Sure, nobody is saying that he (and the other 1st team regulars) do all the work and are the be-all and end-all.

As with any profession, the best are the most in demand and command the highest salaries; it applies to project managers, store owners, footballers and all other sportspeople, actors & musicians, politicians, marketing companies, you name it.

The Premiership players (and I'm not the world's greatest footy fan, nor a ManU or Rooney supporter) represent the peak of their profession.

I would suggest that paying more than 50p in the £1 in taxes (including income tax and NI) is a tipping point.

The fact that you are then charged a further 20% on what you spend (apart from the essentials, which presumably the earnings above the tax boundary don't contribute towards) means that the government takes something like 70% of those salaried higher earners' income.

Well, that's a pretty good business model for the government, for sure!

And people say they want more.

Taxing the rich until the pips squeak is working so well in France.

Is that why London is now the largest 5th/6th largest city in France? ;)
