Tax back

This is probably a silly question, I have just never had to ask it.

Can you claim tax back part way through a year. I started my job late in the tax year but will not earn enough by April to pay tax.

I am getting taxed every month, can I claim it back now or do I have to wait until April?

what is the tax code on your wage slip?
did you give your new employer a P45 or fill out a P46

If the paperwork and code were correct then you should not be paying tax now
It sounds like your code is incorrect which could have been caused by no P45 being given
  • A p46 as my agency were slow to send the p45. It was emergency one the first month now it's an l one 944L I think.

a normal tax code is 944L (no letter/number after)

an non normal tax code would be 944L m1 or wk1 or noncom

without knowing exactly your tax code and how much you have earned in this tax year (from 6th April) or how much tax you have paid it's rather difficult to say what the situation

Tax to date is 653. Taxable pay to date is 4841.

I am paying 138 tax a month and 100 nat insurance.

You are currently on emergency tax code as a result of filling in the P46. In theory HMRC will advise your current employer of full tax details but a call to them may speed up this process. As to your tax position cannot say without details of taxable income etc before you started this job.

somewhere near your code of 944L will be some numbers or letters like M1 or Wk1 or noncum or something like that : which are incorrect and it means you are not getting your tax free allowance for the earlie part of the tax year
but phone HMRC is the best thing to get it sorted quickly: have pay details of your agency work when you phone
