  • To do teeth whitening you MUST have a current General Dental Council number, and be a qualified dentist. PLEASE do not be scammed by any of the companies out there selling teeth whitening systems/packages/businesses. Their job is to SELL.
I have lost £1500 by being misled by Megawhite/Dentawhite into buying a teeth whitening package and a 'licence' that costs £30 pcm and isn't worth the paper it's written on. I have got to take them to court to get my money back. If you're wondering Iwas a fully qualified dental Nurse, but have since retired and am now doing Beauty.
I am currently working with the General Dental Council and Bromley Trading Standards to try to prevent these rogues from selling to individuals.
Leave teeth whitening to the professionals in the dental surgery. Visit The General Dental Council website.

I agree that it is not just anyone who can carry out tooth whitening, however it is not just dentists who are permitted to do so.

    From the GDC website,
Until recently, it was the Council’s position that only dentists could undertake tooth whitening. However, it has since been decided by Council that in addition to dentists being able to carry out tooth whitening, dental hygienists, dental therapists and clinical dental technicians, on the prescription of a dentist, can carry out tooth whitening as an additional skill.

It has also been decided that dental nurses can, as an additional skill, take impressions and make bleaching trays to a dentist’s prescription. Any registrant who undertakes work for which they are not sufficiently competent risks fitness to practise proceedings which may affect their registration.

Dentists are the only people allowed to prescribe tooth whitening. Dental therapists and dental hygienists may carry out teeth whitening under a dentists supervision. They cannot set up as independent practitioners to do tooth whitening.

Ditto a dental nurse may only take impressions and make bleaching trays under a dentists supervision. They cannot independently carry out teeth whitening.

Just to add my confirmation as well.

If you're not a dentist, you cannot legally whiten people's teeth. I would report the course organiser to both the General Dental Council and trading Standards. They are scamming people.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
