What sort of top should I wear with.....?

A stretchy, pencil type skirt that is relatively high waisted?

When I was 20 and a size 12 I knew what to wear. Now I am almost 30 & a size 16 & I really don't know. I am trying to get back to a size 12 but after 4 years its not quick! So what should I wear now? Specifically I have a couple of lovely pencil skirts that can be casual or smart (they are patterned so need a plain top) but I don't know what to wear with them.

I am 5.6 feet tall, size 16, have a shape from the front (waist, hips etc) but look a bit pregnant from the side, I have a very large chest, I'm sort of equally fat all over (i.e. my arms, legs etc are all chubby). My hips/bum are probably proportionally my smallest part while my tummy, thighs & bust are probably biggest. I have a long body & short legs.

I think these skirts look funny with a long top over them but I seem to look a bit tweedle dee/tweedle dum if I wear a top tucked in... I spend most of my time in relatively casual clothes as I am a mum & childminder but I'd like to look a bit cooler & put together. Any help very much appreciated :)

  • You will be fine with a top not tucked in but it should finish mid hip length. Make sure you have some sort of shapewear on for a smooth line. Bracelet length sleeves with a chunky bangle will slim your wrists. Wear matching dark tights & shoes so there is an unbroken line.
  • I'm thinking a looser plain white top, but still tucked in. As in tucked in but pulled out a bit so it's still loose. Does that make any sense? It does in my head!

What colour is the skirt? Do you have somewhere in mind to wear it?

A nice decorative belt will draw the eye to your waist and is a good topper for high waist skirts. Add either a fitted top that accentuates your chest, or a looser top as am OP suggested.

Wear shapewear if you feel you need to, but if the clothes fit right you shouldn't need to.

Wear the highest heels you can, this will make you appear thinner. Xxx
  • definitely a top tucked in. If you have it over the skirt, there is no point in having a nice high waisted skirt. I would tuck the top in for sure. I ofetn wear high waisted skirts to work, and I generally have a t hirt like top (not too tight) and tuck it in, with a narrow belt round the highest part of my waist to emphasise it. Good luck!

Definitely a top tucked into the skirt. It draws the eye to the smallest part of your body - your waist. IMO, the first girl looks smaller, neater and more pulled together than the second girl.

Yes I agree, tucked in. Otherwise you could look shapeless and straight up and down. Accentuate your curves, dont hide them! :)
  • How about a peplum top, you know, one of those which has a "skirt" type thing at the waist?
  • I agree, either a block coloured top tucked it, or a peplum top.

  • definitely a top tucked in the pics above speak for themselves. and some shapewear if possible although not 100% necessary. I think this look is perfect for women with curves as it really shows off the shape xx
  • A bow blouse might look really nice tucked in loosely into your pencil skirts. I own a few in black, white and cream and they tend to go with everything.

I like to wear them with the sleeves rolled up to my elbows and to throw on a few chunky bracelets. Make sure to wear a cami or vest underneath too - it will show off your curves underneath and stop everyone from seeing your bra if the chiffon is too sheer! :rotfl:
