I do recall seeing on the news a few years ago people who had sold their houses and moved to rented accommodation believing that the market would crash enabling to use the money released form their sale to upgrade to a bigger property. I suppose if you had sold in July 2008 and purchased inn the right area in 2010 it could have been done. A very risky venture though- anybody know of anyone who actually did it, or are still renting (God knows how much that will have cost them versus a mortgage over the past 6 years)?
Where I live the homes are now going for 2008 prices, I bought here in 2003 so whilst my property hasn't gone up since 2008 I have cleared a load of the mortgage so the equity has increased, and my mortgage is about £200 cheaper than renting next door.0 -

It also says this-
However, there is rising speculation that interest rates will increase later this year, despite Wednesday's MPC minutes making it clear the central bank is in no hurry to raise rates.
Sir John Gieve, former deputy governor of the Bank of England, told the BBC he thought there was a "reasonable chance" interest rates would rise by the end of the year if the economy continued to strengthen.
And on Wednesday, US bank Citigroup said it expected the Bank of England to raise interest rates in the final quarter of this year, not the beginning of 2015 as previously projected.
Speculation of an early rate rise boosted the value of the pound, which climbed to $1.6615 against the US dollar - a two-and-a-half year high - in morning trading.:beer:0 -
Yep, I bet it doesnt go above 2% in the next 5 years though!
All this talk of rates going up will kill any export sales due to a strong pound. You can expect the PR side of the BOE talking to the crusties and the proles about rate rises, whilst begatting the virtue of low rates for longer in the FT.0 -

seems pretty doveish to me.
if inflation stays as it is, where is the requirement to raise rates?0 -

I've already saved much more than I thought I would have from lower rates from when they were first reduced, so everything extra is just a bonus. If it takes another 5 years to get back up to 5% that will suit me fine. Although a new 'normal' rate of 3% would be even better:
