Official receiver - scary!

Hi, I had my telephone interview with the official receiver and during conversations was asked how I came to be bankrupt. I was scared to admit that it was just down to stupidity, overspending and lack of budgeting so said something else now I feel worried that they're gonna look at my account and ill get in trouble for not telling the whole accurate truth. I haven't done anything fraudulent but I think it's really scary talking to her!
I'm speaking to her again next week and should I just say actually it's because of those reasons?

  • Is the other thing you said completely and utterly made up, or is it true?
I'd suggest that it's 100% best to be truthful and honest - only because this will now hang over you and be an extra weight and worry.
A whole lot of people go bankrupt for the overspend/budgeting/daft financial decisions when desperate reason. The OR knows that. They won't penalise you for being human.
You can phone then and talk to them before next week. Don't sit and worry about this for 7 days.

  • I think they will be used to people feeling scared. Also used to "stupidity, overspending and lack of budgeting" being the underlying cause of bankruptcy. Just be honest next week.

    Hello there,

The Official Receiver isn't out to try and cause you any great difficulties, they'll want to see you go through the bankruptcy process as smoothly as possible. As the others have mentioned, the situation you find yourself in is one which they would be more than familiar with. Over the years I have spoken to thousands of clients, many of who have gone on to take the bankruptcy route. Don't feel to afraid to let the Official Receiver know a bit about the background - the fact that you're seeking help and support strikes me that this wasn't a decision you have taken lightly - and I'm sure the OR would absolutely understand your reasons.

    Best wishes,

    David @ NDL.
