Do references always have to come from your current or last employer?

What if you are on a temporary contract? or only worked in your current/last role for a short period of time, but worked in past jobs for much longer, thus are likely to get a much better reference from them?
Can you put past references instead of the current/last one, if you believe they are going to be more positive?

Depends what the potential employer asks for, IME they ask for more than one0

There's no absolute rule. (Except in some regulated industries - like financial services - but if that applied to you you'd probably already know).
Sometimes the employer asks you to provide names and addresses of referees, and sometimes the employer says it wants your last x jobs - it's up to the employer.0 -
Some employers may ask for a reference from last employer if it looks like they've been avoided. Helps ensure they're not setting someone on who's been sacked and used earlier employers as referees.0

Would you not be better to ask your previous employer if they are willing to provide you a reference?
How well did you get on with your direct manager?
When you were asked to leave your last role was there any mention of references?0
