Entitlements on sabbatical

I have been granted a 6 month sabbatical. Two days after the sabbatical starts I have to have surgery, and expect to be 'laid up' for between 3 and 6 weeks. Am I able to claim sickness benefit from anywhere?

You just get on with whatever you were going to do on your sabbatical - or miss out on that activity if necessary for the 3 to 6 weeks.

Only "sickness benefit" might be if you have a long-standing health plan which pays out for hospital stays. Do you have that kind of private insurance that you have paid premiums for?

    Is it paid ?
  • It is an unpaid sabbatical, I was planning to do a bit of work and a bit of travel.

It depends upon the terms of your secondment. In my organisation, you wouldn't be entitled to sick pay, annual leave, maternity pat etc - you are effectively not employed during a sabbatical.

I would be very surprised if they gave you sick pay, but you never know.

We might allow someone to re-arrange their sabbatical (we give paid ones) if this arose, but then our sabbaticals are only 4 weeks not 6 months!

How are you planning to support yourself while having 6 months off work?

Presumably the OP has made preparations for this: if you know your employer will give an unpaid sabbatical then you'd have to save up to take it, wouldn't you?

Also they mentioned doing some work, and some travel, so maybe the work is paid work in another field?
