MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOUR
  • I use to use nutbrawn, saviand, sauslatas, the chicken pie filling (tvp in a white sauce); curry, bologna and loads more. Granose has been sold so many times now and the only things that are left are the ones you dehydrate and they are relatively new. The last ones to go I remember were sausalatas.

I wish they would come back.

John West 3-bean tuna salad in vinaigrette dressing. Nothing else comes close to the deliciousness of this sadly long-gone product. Can't even find a picture of it now. Their replacement 'light lunch' pot just isn't the same. Aldi's equivalent is nothing like and something from Tesco that looked similar was utterly disgusting. I emailed JW asking them to reinstate it, but they poured cold brine on the request.

    I'll never forget you, John West 3-bean tuna salad in a vinaigrette dressing . . . :(

Three Wishes deodorant. I used it daily in my teens along with Bristows shampoo (it was in a brown bottle). I loved the smell and my fine hair loved it.

Vosene (yes i know you can get it now but its a shadow of its former self). Coal tar soap (when there was real coal tar in it). Just the smell of it made me feel clean.

White shelled eggs (i havent seen a white shelled egg for years).

Fragrance.... there used to be a fragrance i used also in my teens. Sukina. I loved it then, would love to see if i still love it now.

In the mid nineties Boots brought out their own line of perfumes. One was called Tu and it was the loveliest perfume I have ever used. I think I bought it twice before they stopped making it.
    I'm still in mourning.

You can get original T-Gel or Polytar shampoo from Boots/Chemists - they both still contain coal tar extract, thankfully (as most people with Psoriasis will agree), so you'd get the good hair (Polytar feels more moisturising than T-Gel, but both are very good on dry hair) and the smell of genuine coal tar.

Stardrops disappeared from the shelves round here a couple of years back, as did granular sugar soap, which worked out much cheaper than the luminous yellow liquid, which doesn't clean nearly as well (and stains if you aren't careful). Can still get a version of Vim/Ajax here, though; I suspect it's been imported.

I miss Garnier Neutralia bubble bath/shower gel/shampoo. They smelled clean and were incredibly gentle, but they decided to withdraw them. I was furious when my ex knew specifically that I'd been looking for the last supplies in the shops, found just one bottle and then he deliberately used it up, claiming it wasn't fair that I should get to use it all because he liked it too . And I haven't seen InfaCare baby bath in the shops for ages, which was the next best thing, although as I used it on the girls when they were babies, it had the unfortunate side effect of making me broody .

Scarily enough, the only other really gentle soap I can have near my skin is Ecover Camomile washing up liquid. When I was a skint student, I still made a point of getting it, especially as I used to be able to get refills from a health food shop, and general skintness meant I had to wash my hair with it, as washing up liquid was more important than shampoo. It worked really well, much gentler than standard wul and smelled nice.

The food things I miss are Beanfeasts. They used to do a chilli flavour one which was really tasty as soya products go. And Aqua-Libra, which was a lightly fizzy, not too sweet drink that had cucumber, pear and melon in it. The company was taken over by one of the big manufacturers and they immediately stopped production. :( Oh, and Tivall hotdogs!

I miss my local independent health food shop most. They used to be able to maintain a business despite Holland and Barrett having a shop half a mile away and then deciding to set up another one right next door, but long after that H&B had closed, the freeholder made massive demands and they couldn't stay anymore, as healthy/veggie food had kind of gone out of fashion. Just three years later and the 'eat clean' and vegan trends started up and H&B have made enough money to be able to open a second shop again, this time about 300m away from the old one.

It's good that I can get dairy free icecream again, but the independent shop had people who weren't trying to flog you vitamins and supplement drinks packed full of whey and sugar, they were a great source of information, books, magazines and advice, even saying to me as a 16 year old 'you look a little pale, dear. I'd be happier if you popped in to see your doctor to check whether you're anaemic or not, but in the meantime, don't buy x, y, get z (cheaper) as that's got vitamins added to it. Promise me you'll go, then come back to let me know what he said and we can spend some time planning things to make sure you're healthy'.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.
