    Thanks Iona.

I went out after 10 minutes and it was out again. I put it in, it came out. I put it in, it came out. Third time I put it in and held it in firmly in for five minutes. Five minutes later, still in.

Went back to check after an hour, still in.

The clincher will be when she lays again, which I suspect she will do tomorrow. I've no doubt it will come out again, but I'll just keep on with the Prep H and stuffing it in and holding for 5-10 minutes.

I have been thinking about getting hens for a wee while now, and now the opportunity has presented itself, so I started reading through this thread. This most recent page has sort of turned me off the idea...

Chicken keeping is really addictive and im so glad i took the plunge. Unfortunately chickens are susceptible to illness and disease and need a lot of human effort to keep them in good health.its just great when the chooks are at your feet trumpeting their happiness and passing it on to you.

Steel Please keep us informed of your efforts and how things are going. Don't give up !

Noooo! Don't let me put you off. I've had chickens for three years now and this is the first time I've had to deal with this particular problem. Chickens are funny, sweet and loving little things that enrich your life so much. I sometimes go and sit in the pen with a cup of tea and watch them for a while zooming round, sunbathing, dustbathing etc. My dominant ex-batt comes and sits on me (I am HER property :D), usually to try and distract me so she can steal the dregs of my tea.

Anyway, Marybelle's prolapse seems to have cleared up for now - I went to check on her this morning and this evening and all is well and where it should be! Going to keep up the 'bed early in a dark place' for a few more days though to keep her off the lay and let her recover.

I gave her a huge handful of raspberries, strawberries and baby spinach about an hour ago and she loved them so much. And if anything, this episode has helped me bond with her better. She was a bit skittish before and wasn't happy being handled (and damn fast so it was almost impossible to catch her). Now she's fine - just stands still cooing at me.

Don't be put off having chickens. They are great fun, and all have individual personalities. We have a section outside the chicken area that we have grassed and put chairs in so that we can sit and watch them. I can assure you that they are more interesting that most things on TV!!

Well I've had a great start to a Sunday morning. At 7:35am I was face to face with a prolapsed vent on one of my girls. I've separated her from the others in case they start pecking at the pink flesh and sent hubby out to Tesco for supplies.

He told me it's only because he loves me that he would go to our local Tesco with his head held high and buy two plastic bowls, hemorrhoid cream, duct tape and KY jelly. :rotfl:

I've been reading this thread on and off as we're (OH is v v keen, I'm 55% - and rising, was -100% - persuaded that we should get chickens) but I pmsl @ this.

On a serious note, this is very probably "how long is a piece of string?" but is this a common thing? I ask as I am such a woos when it comes to animals/illness and also have stopped eating chicken as it feels wrong if we're going to be keeping them for eggs!

    No not at all!

I've have had a total of seven chickens over three years and this is the first time I've encountered it.

Oh that's cool... I am so flip flopping over this!

I was totally anti the idea until we went to a garden centre and I saw chickens, they were gorgeous! So pretty :)

I just want to know the pros and cons before I commit. So your post has helped, definitely! Thank you :)

Jmurph and Chocolate Buttons please don't be put off by our discussions about chicken illnesses.

Chickens are a delight to have and as so many people have said they are funny, chatty, and full of character. They get ill like any pets might.

I've had chickens for 3 years now and I only wish I had kept some sooner. I love hearing them shout after laying an egg. I also love coming home and seeing 3 bobbing heads as they dance in front of their gate waiting to be let out.

Glad to hear Marybelle is much better STEEL.
