  • Straw for the nesting box and I use sawdust in the covered run and the coop. Don't know about how yours will be but mine tend to knock the food and water containers over so l find that I need a lot of patience! Also a dustbin or similar with a tight fitting lid to keep the food in and rodents out.

ahhh I knew there was something!! I have the perfect container for food, plus straw is not a problem living in between four farms!!!

They will not have a covered run for the time being... need to get OH to work on that :)... for the moment I am going to build a little 'box' for them with one side open so they can go in out of the wind and rain if they want......

    Sooo excited!

  • Thanks I really want to get some ASAP but need to convert our old shed and clear out our garage to put the stuff from the shed in and make a run while we are out during the day. Then just need to find a local supplier of ex-battery or POL chickens now that are not at rip off prices like at Dobbies. Can anyone recommend places in Warwickshire or close by?

Warwickshire's big! The following is in Worcestershire but just up the road is Warwickshire............just depends where you are.

It's a great place for chickens tho'!

I got mine from Hiedi's happy hens in rugby. They are pol and cost £12.50 for rangers, £15. for most of the rest except for some fancy blue layers which were very beautiful but at £25 each I managed to resist! Although they say pol I had to wait about 5 weeks for mine to start laying, good advice from them and they clipped the wings for me and showed me how to for next time. They also have a website to look at.

went to Heidi's and have 4 lovely girls waiting for me to collect on saturday.

The shed is nearly converted and the run has been built and its huge hoping to have more chickens in the future.

Haha, I saw that in the paper the other week! I wonder how easy it is to clean out.
  • At that price, I would expect it to clean itself!!

Hurrah finally starting getting eggs from our little foursome. When we bought them right at the end of august we knew it might be a while as the kids had set their hearts on certain types/colours 2 of which they didn't have at POL. They would let us have 2 POL and 2 younger, but they advised against it as better to have all the same age when a flock is settling in. I would actually say its worked well as getting them at 13-14 wks meant there were smaller to handle and for us and the kids to get used to. It also gave them and us plenty of time to settle in. Because of the shorter days they have only just started laying, but its so exciting. Kids keep going out to check lol. Toddler (3) got one yesterday to bring in and managed to carry it safely accross the whole garden only to drop it on the patio just by the door doh!

Had one of those soft shelled eggs which the kids thought was fascinating.

    Love my chickens lol.
