    I've been Money Tipped!
Does anyone keep turkeys as pets?

Someone I go to for stock does and is always telling me I'd love them. He describes them as ''doggy'' and good fun.

I used to keep 5 chickens and 2 ducks in my garden... We had complaints from neighbours  which I ignored and eventually we moved to a country house (not as grand as it sounds :D )

Anyway, I am back in my house, in a town... and I don't know if it is legal to keep chickens where I live...

How can i found out, and how can I appeal if its not allowed...

As far as I am concerned, keeping 2 or 3 chickens is much better than keeping a cat (which craps in anyones gardens)

Please can anyone give me advice on this... I really want my kids to learn about where food comes from, and I do love a couple of chooks running about free in my garden clearing up slugs, snails etc!

    Thanks :)
  • Why were there complaints? I think cat owners should be forced to keep the damn things inside. They mess everywhere, invade other peoples gardens and kill millions of birds a year.

If I had a couple of chickens next door, I would be quite pleased.

Not entirely sure why one neighbour complained... The ducks were a bit noisy, but I would prefer a neighbour of mine kept a few noisy ducks that a load of cats that crap in my garden

My thoughts exactly and I WILL keep chickens and fight the council if they try to make problems for me for exactly those reasons... Cats are far more of a problem that chickens!

Wish you were my neighbour and I could share a few eggs :D

    Thanks for your input :)

Contact your local council, and ask them :) Is there anything in the deeds/lease that preclude keeping livestock?

We've kept hens for nearly 30 years, with no complaints, even when we had a succession of Singing Cockerells :p

I'll add this to the main hen keeping thread later.

I'd imagine you'd need a very large garden or a field to keep turkeys. There was a turkey at the local county show and it was huge!
  • For anyone interest in getting some chucks, The little Hen recue in Norfolk has lots of ex-battery girls to rehome. Weve had our latest one for over 18mth and get 3 eggs a day everyday and they are the best eggs ever. Get a chuck everyone!! Im all for productive pets.http://littlehenrescue.co.uk

Ditto the advice - speak to your council - then even if your neighbours don't like it you already have permission! Thats what I did, but like you I got rid of my 7 girls (they moved in with my SIL) when we moved. I have found out I HATE buying eggs!

I have found myself wondering if my Landlord will mind if I have a couple back!

It might be mentioned in your deeds, in ours it says clearly that poultry isn't allowed. We're not sure who would want to enforce it but it would be something that could be brought up.

Why would chickens be noisy unless you kept a cockerel? Two of my neighbours have chickens and you don't hear the proverbial cheep out of them. Are some chickens quieter than others? I'd love to have a couple too but my garden is more exposed than theirs and I think they'd be vunerable to the local neds and their nasty tricks. Still, I can do a bit of bartering for eggs.

I've got cats btw but they do live indoors. My last two got splatted on the main road outside the house, three months apart. Indoor cats may have slightly more boring lives but they do live longer, around here anyway.
