Woohoo! That's great news. I live not far from where the eglu is. You could stop by for a cup of tea when you come to collect it. :)

Thanks! You never know - we may take you up on your kind offer ;).

Just realised how much stuff we're going to have to get when we actually get the chucks so you may well see a whole lot more than me on here. The nice thing with the Cube is that we can definitely get 3 chickens now and won't need to worry about room, whereas I was a bit concerned after doing some research that if we had the Go/Classic that it'd end up being a bit of a squeeze if we had all 3.

Yeah, I realised that I'm going to have to get rodent proof bins for storing the feed and bedding as there's no room in the shed to store it. And I need to get drinkers and feeders. Hubby said galvanised ones would be best until he saw the prices! Still, I've got the most expensive bit now (the coop and run).
  • Congrats all new mums / dads!
Had to so some more emergency medical treatment to get rid of blood trickling from picked new feathers over the last couple of days but all in all they are all looking and seeming SO happy!
I used the top of the new shelter ONCE and now, the hens run to meet me, and in the time it takes me to get in the run (otherwise known as a quagmire atm!) half are upthere waiting!
Have introduced laying pellets into food the last day or so, as I think its time since their bodies rested for a few weeks and they are settling nicely. Though, they harass me for the leftovers more! They look atme as if to say.. is that all we are getting???? when I dont take leftovers! Paris loves her chips and protests greatly at only corn!
This was the best thing i EVER did! and thank you for all the support so far, and continuing I hope!

I too have a quagmire Jexygirl, but then Dh realised if we moved the henhouse 6 inches to one side I could stand on the path to sort out the girls - Duh! Spread some straw in the run and that seems to make it easier in there for all concerned. Strange thing though we seem to be having a lot of friends visiting this week who make us stand in the garden with them while we talk 'chickens'. Think its the best thing I did in a long time, I feel as if the lifestyle I have always longed for is coming together and the eggs are so good.

Picking up the Cube tomorrow now :j:j! Been to see some chickens and like the Amber Star, Goldline (I think that's what they're called - little red hens) and I do like the Bluebelle but apparently they can be a bit feisty, so better choose something else.

    Very exciting!!!!

  • Hi im new to keeping chickens, my chickens are 34 weeks old and i got my first egg about 7 weeks ago but i think only one off them is laying as im only getting 1 egg every other day, My ageing uncle who used to keeps chickens has told me one off them is a "dudd" as its not laying, is there such a thing? Is there something im doing wrong? Any advice on keeping chickens would be gratefully recieved.

I have a small mixed flock of chickens 13 hens and a cockerel.

When one (an ex batt) had bumble foot a couple of weeks ago the vet operated to drain it ...it cost £58......and the problem returned.....today same chicken same foot same vet....£46.

I feel reluctant to kill an otherwise healthy bird because of a foot infection but the cost is madness certainly not MSE.

My neighbour has previously helped me to self treat and lance/drain this with another chicken that did very well and is still with us today.

    What do you all do?
