You seem to expect other people to do things whuich are YOUR responsibility.
I was trying to help you by getting you to see that it is very fundamental that you know what you have paid to whom and what it was for and that the answer is in your books and records where you can easily find it.
You first blamed HMRC for your deficiency and now you're having a go at me. you're obviously someone who is never wrong and always right.
you know and so does everyone else that read your comment that you offered no help whatsoever, unlike others that answered, my main question was regarding the confusion at the end of filing the return online, having never done it before i was unsure what ammount i needed to pay hence the question, the comment about hmrc having all the figures to hand was an observation, as we were told that hmrc do all the calculations for you and i assumed this would take into account any payments made in advance ....why wouldnt that assumption be correct?

You must learn to stop accusing others and assuming they will do things for you when they are your responsibility.

sorry for ease i quoted those figures. so basically we would have paid something towards this years tax last year? if so how do we find out what that figure was? i would have thought hmrc would have all the figures to hand and it would be part of the calculation done when filing the tax return

This is your responsibility. HMRC do have their own information on your payments and this is available to you through the "view account" option

The thing is, we all make mistakes, and sometimes it seems that HMRC staff make more than most.

When Mum had a letter from HMRC saying she'd underpaid tax in the first year after Dad had died (not uncommon), I couldn't check whether she did or not using THEIR figures. I had to ask her to find HER figures: how much state pension was she getting, how much from Dad's pensions, any other income.

Same for anyone running a business, or having to do self-assessment. you have to know what YOUR figures are, and if you don't, you're stuffed.
